The origin of Russian idioms
There are theories that say that some Russian idioms were influenced by the French language and culture. For example, a funny Russian phrase is не в своей тарелке, which sounds as ne pas dans son assiette in French. While in French assiette means condition, in Russian it was mistranslated as a plate. The weird idiom became common and saying that you're not in your plate now means that you're not comfortable in a situation. Some of the Russian sayings were invented by people many centuries ago and still remain popular in everyday conversations. Many Russian proverbs are related to professions, for example, большая шишка means "an important person, a boss in a company". Translating Russian into English, it will sound like a "big pinecone". The pinecone is an important symbol in Russian culture and an ingredient in Russian cuisine. Not only people make marmalade out of it, use it to make tincture but also it is a symbol of power, force and fertility. Another interesting Russian slang phrase is на лбу написано - "it is written on one's forehead". This Russian expression comes from 1746 when the Russian Empress Elizabeth ordered for the criminals to be marked on the forehead so they can be easily distinguished from other people. When you say that "something is written on a person's forehead", you mean that it is something very clear about that person.
